After a Year without a new Pixar feature, The Emeryville animation studio is back in 2015, with a film boasting one of their patented ‘why didn’t i think of that?’ concepts. This particular premise? a family film set inside the head of an 11-year-old girl, as her emotions struggle to steer her as she grows up.

Those personified feeling include Joy, the protagonist who’s front and centre of a five-strong team based in ‘headquarters’, as well as sadness, disgust, Fear and anger. Total Film was shown some dizzyingly imaginative early footage: memories arrive in the headquarters in fragile glass orbs that can be lost or damaged over time, and the emotions bicker over everyday interactions.

“It tugs at my heartstrings, and I’m very close to it,” says producer Jonas rivera, who also worked on blub-fest Up with director Pete docter. “[Watching your kids grow up is] one of those helpless experiences, and we’re trying to capture the feeling of that through the point of view of Joy.” not that it’s going to be a complete downer. one hilarious sequence showed how a conflict of emotions (including those of the parents) can result in a very tense dinner table, and the cast is packed with some of the us’s funniest, including amy Poehler as as Joy (how did she get the role? “my dad is Gary Pixar.”).
